Problem Statement

Many people suffer from joint pain and require physiotherapy to recover. However, tracking progress over time can be challenging. Patients may not know whether their exercises are effective, and doctors or physiotherapists may find it difficult to monitor improvements without frequent visits. This leads to inconsistency in treatment and slower recovery.

To ensure patients perform their exercises correctly and consistently, a system is needed that provides guidance, tracks progress, and gives feedback. By using computer vision technology to analyze movement, we can help users understand their improvement and stay motivated. This solution reduces dependency on frequent clinic visits and provides a structured way to measure recovery.

Proposed Solution

We propose a computer vision based motion tracking and physiotherapy delivery system:

The system solicits various medical details about the user including age, medical conditions, lifestyle details including activity levels, sleep levels etc.
A certified physiotherapist views the data and decides which exercise and activities to suggest to the user.
The system then suggests pre-recorded exercise videos to the user based on their data and in alignment with their condition. These videos also contain motion related data such as correct angles during exercise in order to provide a benchmark for the user to achieve.
The user is instructed to watch the video and record themselves following the exercises.
The user uploaded videos are processed and motion analysis is performed to extract bodily-motion data such as positions and movement of key body parts during exercises.
After a set period of time, the system asks the user to record a new video of the same exercise to compare past and current motion analysis data.
Motion analysis is performed on the new video to compare the user’s progress over that period using the past and current data for the same exercises.
The progress is then viewed by the physiotherapist and further recommendations are provided to the user.

Limitations of Solution

Motion analysis accuracy depends on video quality.
Users may not have optimal hardware for recording high quality videos which can reduce the accuracy of the performed motion analysis.
The manual review and approval of data by certified professionals can introduce latency in communication of updated physiotherapy plans with the user.
May not replace the need for a professional physiotherapist in severe cases where in-person consultation and oversight become necessary.
